By Eric Granstrom

For FishingMagician.com, I'm Eric Granstrom. Good news for those getting ready for the Brewster Salmon Derby next weekend! The State Department of Fish and Wildlife has changed the rules to allow one, unmarked Chinook salmon to be part of your two fish a day limit. The rule is effective starting today and runs until further notice from the Highway 173 Bridge at Brewster to Highway 17 Bridge at Bridgeport. According to the Department, "current estimates of un-clipped (wild) adult chinook salmon returning to the Okanogan River exceed spawner escapement needs. Approximately 2,000 wild adult chinook are available for harvest by recreational sport anglers." This is a direct result of the work of the Chief Joseph Hatchery developed by the Bonneville Power Administration in conjunction with the Colville Tribes. The returns to the Brewster Pool this year have been bolstered by the first smolt release by the hatchery in July of 2013. Dave and I did a tour of the hatchery in the winter of 2013, several months before the first fish release, which you can find on our YouTube page by searching Bridgeport Hatchery on FishingMagician. I hope to get out fishing this weekend. Until next time, Good Fishing!
