On Monday I helped out with the Annual Whitney West Kids Fishing Day at the Cove Resort at Fish Lake. Whitney got Trout Unlimited and the Upper Valley Connection folks to host a day of fishing for youth of various challenges, for her senior project at Cascade High School, and it was such a hit it has been going on ever since. The youth are treated to a morning of fishing and then a terrific lunch of hot dogs, burgers and all the trimmings. I want to send out a big thanks to all that came to help with this rewarding event. That evening my wife wanted to get out on the water, so we ran up to Chelan Falls to try for salmon. When I arrived the fish checker told me that it was the slowest day of the season, with very few fish checked in that morning. Oh well. We were there so off we went. I put out my Super Baits on lead balls and started trolling. Holly Cow. We got a good strike, and the fish took off for Rocky Reach Dam with me holding on for dear life. This fish, which appeared to be about 18 pounds, jumped four times, and it jumped off the hook right next to the boat before Eileen could even make a good stab at it. Although we didn’t go home with a fish in the box our spirits were high. I know I will get a couple next time, when the bite is better.
