I had a spectacular opening day of summer run salmon fishing. I was invited to join Shane and Audre Magnuson and Matt and Lindsey Williams to start the season at Chelan Falls. The early morning bite here was amazing. Fish were being caught all around us, and we had five kings in the fish box by 5 a.m. It slowed some, which allowed us to enjoy a breakfast of eggs, sausage and oven-fresh biscuits right on the boat. We actually went for a stretch of almost an hour once without a hook up, but by 9:15 we had 10 adults and a jack. We had released one wild fish, too. We had three doubles during the early morning flurry, and we lost a few fish. If this is any indication of what is ahead of us for the summer season, we are in for a dandy. Sockeye continue to come off the ocean and the counts continue to mount over Bonneville. We are assured of a sockeye season on the upper Columbia River now, and it should open soon. We will have to wait to see if we get to keep two or three. I also expect to see Lake Wenatchee open for sockeye either late July or early August.
