Salmon fishing has captured the attention of most anglers in Central Washington, but there are those who still chasing giant kokanee on Lake Roosevelt. They know that these fish are putting on weight prior to their spawning period, which will be coming up soon. The prospect of catching kokanee weighing over 4 pounds and possibly the new state record is what is attracting them to the big reservoir. I was invited to join Mike McKee for a try at these monsters last Thursday. He was part of a group outing made up of members of the Wenatchee Fishing Forum. I met him at the dock at the Keller launch and we headed up the lake to fish near the mouth of the San Poil Arm. There were a couple of other boats working this area when we arrived, but couldn’t attract a strike. We trolled out of the arm and around a point. He was checking his bait on one rod when the one behind him went off, he snatched it up and passed it to me behind his back and then netted our first big kokanee of the day. About an hour later we had four whopper kokanee in the cooler. We found the best depth at 50 feet and either orange hoochies or Kokabow orange spinners and gold blades did the job.
