By Dave Graybill

I just got back from the Columbia River Gorge and Fish Camp, which I attend every year at this time. I had some great fishing this trip. The first day I got to float the Klickitat River with Johnny Boitano of the Troutwater Fly Shop in Ellensburg and the Director of Washington Fish and Wildlife Jim Unsworth. We had fished the Yakima earlier this year with Boitano and we both wanted to try the Klickitat. Jim’s schedule worked best while I was at Fish Camp. It turned out that very warm weather earlier in the week had the river very dirty, but we decided to go anyway, and we were both glad we did. This is a beautiful float. We were fishing nymphs and beads under indictors and we both got good hits. I manage to hook to two wild steelhead, which we released, and Unsworth hooked a small king that we let go as well. Unsworth also got a good hit while swinging a fly in one run. The Klickitat is fishing very well now that the weather cooled down and it is full of steelhead and king salmon. According to Boitano it will be good clear into November.
