Many people may be unaware that there is an opportunity to catch a freshwater fish that will give you all the fight that you can take. Sturgeon fishing, which is done on a catch and release basis on the upper Columbia River, offers a chance to do battle with a fish that just may out-fight you, because they grow to be over ten feet long and weigh hundreds of pounds! Eric Granstrom brought the video camera along and he and I fished with Austin Moser below Rock Island Dam recently. Some may think that these freshwater giants are rare and when hooked just sulk on the bottom. Not so in either case. We hooked eight fish and landed six of them before we were worn out. It is not unusual to see these behemoths jump clear out of the water, too. One of Granstrom’s fish jumped three times before we could tow it to shore to release it. The fish we fought ranged in size from six feet to an astonishing 12 feet in length, and took 30 minutes or more to subdue. Right now is a great time to fish for sturgeon in the upper Columbia for a chance at doing battle with the larger fish that inhabit this stretch of the river.
