By Dave Graybill

I can’t remember when I was more excited about the approach of the fall season here in Central Washington. Locally, everyone knows this is the best season of the year if you enjoy the outdoors. The weather is moderate, and there is a big long list of things to do. This is my favorite time for many reasons, and they all fall under the category of fishing. Let me expand. The small streams are still in perfect condition and will offer great fishing till they get cold. The larger rivers like the Methow and the Yakima will produce big rainbow and cutthroat at the best numbers of the year. The salmon fishing on the upper Columbia will be very, very productive. The fish will be highly aggressive and this is when I like to back-troll bait wrapped plugs. I get more fish now than earlier in the season, and what makes it even better is that the quality of the fish is exceptional this year. The trout fishing and bass fishing on area lakes and reservoirs also gets better in the fall. One of the lakes that gets probably as much attention in the fall as the spring is Lenore for big Lahontan cutthroat.
