Once again the Budweiser-Lowrance King Salmon Derby benefiting the Brewster Chamber of Commerce was a huge success. Anglers from as far away as Idaho and Montana came to participate, and the third annual event was sold out. Since this is a fairly new derby I suppose it is no surprise that young anglers are dominating the winner’s circle. The big winner this year was Joe Townsend, just 15 years old, with a 29.1 ounce king. Jessica Hammons, daughter of guide Rod Hammons took first place in the youth division, with an 18-pound, 4-ounce fish. Jessica, who is 14, had placed in the money in past derbies and finally captured first place. Fishing conditions were tough due to high winds in Friday, but anglers that persevered turned in more fish that the first day of the derby last year. Over $16,000.00 in cash and prizes were awarded to the anglers that participated in the derby this year. Special thanks goes out to Mike Campbell at Lowrance, Tom Thompson at Budweiser and Bob Fateley of the Brewster Triangle Shell. Proceeds from the derby will go to local projects in Brewster and for fish enhancement projects locally as well.
