By Dave Graybill

I got a chance to launch the Lund below Wells Dam on an afternoon recently, and found the fishing to be pretty fair. I bumped into the fish checker on the way down the hill to the ramp, and he reported that the morning fishing had been tough. He had checked quite a few boats but not many fish. I wasn’t about to turn around and take my two guests home, so I put the boat in the water and headed for the eddy on the far side of the river. I had put one bait out on the downrigger and turned around to let the other line out when I heard a ruckus. It was Greg already fighting a fish! The bait hadn’t been out more than a minute. We landed the 12-pounder and managed to get both lines out without interruption. It was a long interval between the next fish, but my other guest, Scott, did land a 15-pounder later on. We had a few light bumps in between and were pleased to have two nice kings on board when we headed for shore. I was using green label, plug-cut herring behind a number one size white dodger to get the kings to strike.
