The fishing for summer-run salmon is nothing to sneeze at right now, and things are looking up for the fall run and the steelhead seasons. I just got my new Lund and will be hitting the upper Columbia very hard now and there is good news for fans of fall fishing for kings. The counts over Bonneville showed a peak of about 15,000 fall run fish last week. It will take a while for these kings to reach our area, and there will be a fair number of anglers who will be traveling to fish below Wanapum Dam to head them off on their way up stream. I got a chance to fish there last year and found it to be very productive. I fished with Shane Magnuson of Upper Columbia Guide Services and another buddy and we boated kings to over 30 pounds. I know Shane plans to head down there again this year when decent numbers of fish arrive in the area. The recent steelhead count over Priest Rapids Dam has passed 8,000. The magic number to watch for is 10,500, which is what we need to have a fishery on the upper Columbia, Methow and Wenatchee rivers.
