By Dave Graybill

I start getting calls in June. “Are the perch biting at Fish Lake?” they ask. Well, they are now. I stopped by the Cove Resort recently and the action off the dock was fast and furious. The perch were grabbing hooks as fast as people could get their lines out. Sometimes two perch on one line, with a double hook rig. The best bait was periwinkles, gathered from an area stream, but worms were claiming fish, too. A short cast from the dock was all it was taking to reach the fish. Most anglers were rigged with a bell sinker on the end of the line, with a hook or two spaced a foot apart above the sinker. The perch bite certainly isn’t restricted to the dock. Boats were anchored in the Cove Resort bay, and also on the main lake, in the area of the south end. People will need to search for perch. Try a spot for a while and if the action isn’t fast-paced, move a ways. Don’t worry. You’ll find them. Anglers are reminded to keep their catches within reason. Some get carried away. Usually, 25 perch are enough for a feed.
