By Dave Graybill

I had promised my friend Bill Hansen to take him fishing again. It had been a couple of years since we went to Potholes in the fall and he landed a 27-inch walleye. I needed to plan something that would really knock his socks off, so I decided that we should make a trip to Rufus Woods. The fishing up here has been stupid good this summer and it would make for a memorable experience. We started trolling bottom bouncers and crawlers below the net pens and Bill’s first fish was a dandy walleye. He got another one a bit later. We were getting plenty of walleye bites but no triploids. Weird. I thought we might do better at the next net pens down, but still had trouble getting triploids Now this is how stupid good the fishing is: I put my bow mount in anchor mode and we dropped out bottom bouncers to the bottom and cranked the weights just off the bottom. We got our four big triploids in less than an hour—and when Bill brought in the last rod it had a walleye on it! On the way home Bill put another walleye in the cooler on Banks. Quite a day.
