While most of the attention will be on the Seep Lakes that opened on April 1st this weekend, there will be a ton of boats out on Potholes Reservoir. The word is out. The great walleye fishing that anglers experienced last season is off and running again this year. The mild spring weather we’ve had has the fishing about a month ahead of schedule. I recently fished Potholes with guide Shelby Ross, of Ross Outdoor Adventures, and we had terrific fishing. Although Ross figured we were right in the middle of the spawn we caught fish after fish from about 9 a.m. till 1 p.m., when we landed out 16th fish and completed out limits. Ross had us trolling whole nightcrawlers on the Slow Death Hooks, with a silver flake Smile Blade behind two ounce bottom walkers. We fished in water that varied radically from 20 to 30 feet, and were in the area that was just below where Crab Creek enters the reservoir. The fish were fat and healthy and ranged from 14 to 23 inches. It looks like if you want to find consistent walleye fishing, Potholes Reservoir is going to be the place again this season.
