Good news for fans of fishing at Rufus Woods. I had heard rumors that the state had been planting triploids up there, but that didn’t sound right to me. I called Ed Shallenberger, fish manager with the Colville Tribe, and he confirmed that there had been some triploids planted, not by the state but by the tribe. In fact they had released 3,000 fish three weeks ago, another 500 last week and plant to release two to three thousand a month from now on. As I recall the funding for this program is coming from the BPA and is good for a couple of years. Part of the program is the tagging of fish, and the information the tribe gets from the tags will help them determine how fast the trout move through the reservoir, how fast they grow, how long they live and the success rate of anglers. It is important that when people catch tagged triploids to call the number on the tag and get the information requested to the people with Colville Tribal fisheries. This program, if it proves out, will help sustain this popular fishery for triploid rainbow trout on Rufus Woods Reservoir.
