Everyone thinks of April as a big fishing month. The statewide lowland lake season opens the last weekend of the month, but there is a whole lot going on before that! Next Thursday is the April Fools Opener in the Columbia Basin, and there will be anglers scattered over a couple dozen lakes, getting their first crack at trout fishing for the season. On Wednesday, April 7th, there is a seminar being held at Town Ford in Wenatchee for fishermen. This one will feature Shane Magnuson on spring salmon fishing on the lower Columbia and the Icicle rivers, and Gordon Steinmetz on spring walleye fishing in our region. On Saturday, April 10th, the second Annual Kids Trout Derby will be help at Connelly Park in Moses Lake. Thanks to the Moses Lake Irrigation District and Pepsi, the launch bay here will be loaded with rainbow and kids age 5 to 14 can come down and try to win some prizes. Kids can register at various locations in Moses Lake. There will be all kinds of demonstrations and even a casting contest this year. On Saturday, April 17th the Annual Rock Island Kids Fishing Day is scheduled. This is just plain family fun, with lots of trout to catch in the Pitt Pond. This event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon, and hot dogs and Pepsi will be served.
