By Dave Graybill

Martha Lake once again topped the list of best producing lakes on the March 1st opener of the lakes in the Quincy-George area. Anglers that fished this long, narrow lake just to the east of George provided limit action and yearling trout that averaged between 12 and 13 inches. There were carryover rainbow that ranged from 16 to 24 inches landed as well. Next best on the opener was Upper Caliche Lake. Caliche also provided limit or near limit catches for anglers with the trout running smaller than those at Martha. Most people were pleased with their stringers of 10 to 11 inch rainbow. The best of the quality lakes that opened March 1st was Lenice, where anglers caught-and-released and average of five to seven rainbow for just two to four hours of fishing, and some anglers were into double digits. Triploid trout ranged in size from 19 to 21 inches, with a few up to 24. Of the five boats checked at Lenore on the opener, anglers caught-and-released five to seven cutthroat that were 14 to 22 inches. The biggest surprise for the opener was the very poor catch rate at Quincy and Burke lakes. Both are expected to provide better action as the water temperatures rise.
