Now that we’re getting some decent weather here in Eastern Washington, anglers are scattered all over taking advantage of some great winter fishing opportunities. Right here near Wenatchee anglers are still taking steelhead just above Rocky Reach Dam. Downstream there is some great catch-and-release sturgeon fishing available. Up the river, below Wells Dam, steelhead fishing is hitting its prime. January is often the best time to be fishing at Wells Dam for steelhead, and the walleye fishing can be excellent as well on the river below the dam. Above Wells there is a big stretch of river that is loaded with steelhead. The Columbia River near Pateros has a whole bunch of holes that hold steelhead through the winter. This is prime bobber-and-jig water, and limits are very common in this area. Then there is Rufus Woods. I heard of a 26-pound triploid rainbow being taken near the net pens here a couple of weeks ago. On my last trip we didn’t get one that big, but our stringer of eight fish must have weighed over 30 pounds! The upper end of Rufus Woods is famous for its walleye fishing this time of year, too.
