The great salmon fishing we’ve had on the upper Columbia River is going to continue into October. This year’s fall run number of returning kings is one of the largest in many years, so anglers are going enjoy some great late-season fishing. Steelhead numbers are also very good and the season is likely to open earlier than it has in recent years. Fall trout fishing should be excellent, too, on many waters here in Central Washington. I had a chance to visit the folks at Tiffany’s Resort on Curlew Lake recently, and the fall trout fish there should be outstanding. A long-time angler on Curlew caught the largest trout ever on Curlew last week, and it weighed over 4 pounds! The bass fishing is amazing at Curlew. My wife and I boated over 30 largemouth in about four hours of fishing while we were there. The other thrilling aspect of fishing at Curlew Lake is the possibility of catching a tiger muskie. We chased one around with the camera, and it must have been five feet long! These fish will swim on the surface with their head on top of the water. What a sight. Fishing at Curlew will be excellent until it freezes this winter.
