It looks like the coho fishing on the Icicle River is really just getting started. We had a wet week in Leavenworth and fish have definitely moved into the river. I see more anglers fishing the stretch below the hatchery and some are having success. A friend reminded me that there have been seasons when the fish really didn’t show up in great numbers until November. I was also surprised to see that some of these late-arriving fish, although dark-skinned, had deep red flesh. I recently walked across the hatchery grounds and looked down at the river from the bridge at the spillway. What I though was rock I was looking at turned out to be a mass of coho. There was a large number of them swarming at the base of the fish ladder. So, there are fish sneaking by anglers and getting upstream. I am finally seeing anglers fishing more of the other spots that are known to hold coho. It looks like fishing is picking up now on the Icicle, and I hope that the fish quality holds up for anglers that love to catch coho on this small stream here in Leavenworth.
