I can’t be everywhere at once, so I contacted Joe Zelinski, who guides for walleye on area waters, and is also a fish checker for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. I was at Wanapum Dam on the opening day of salmon season. According to someone I spoke with on the shore, the turnout was low this year at Wanapum, and catches of Chinook were low as well. Those who fished for sockeye did much better. Joe Zelinski reported that fishing was pretty good for sockeye below Rocky Reach Dam and shore anglers were also getting fish above the dam. There were about 65 boats fishing the Entiat area, and they did pretty good. Chelan Falls was a disappointment. The checker there said that although there were about 100 boats at this popular opening day destination, only two kings had been checked by 9 a.m. Weird. There were about 45 boats fishing below Wells Dam and they had good success on sockeye in the big eddy. A similar number of boats were fishing the Brewster Pool for sockeye and although it seems early, they had decent success. Joe said it was a pretty good opening day overall, except for Chelan Falls.
