The second annual Bonaparte Lake Ice Fishing Derby is happening this Saturday, January 27th, and a whole lot of people have been looking forward to it. Last year around 400 people showed up, and this year they have amassed over $9,000 in cash and prizes to hand out at the event. I talked to Eric Cruz, owner of the Bonaparte Lake Resort, and he said that there is still eight to 12 inches of ice on the lake. He tried his luck last week and caught a 12-pound mackinaw! Others at the resort are making good catches of tiger and rainbow trout. There is some slush on the top of the ice, with the warmer daytime temperatures, but it gets below freezing at night, so it firms up. Everything is shaping up for a really good derby this year. You can stay indoors and at least talk fishing and hunting this weekend. The annual Tri-Cities Sportsman Show started today and runs through Sunday afternoon. It is held at the HAPO Center in Pasco. There is a lot to see and do at this show, and this includes many activities that are meant for kids. There are some great seminars, too.
