For FishingMagician.com, I'm Eric Granstrom. My grandpa Ben was a clam digging fool! Some of my earliest memories of visiting my grandparents in Oregon were wondering where grandpa was and my grandma would tell me, "oh, he's out clam digging again." He'd drive all the way to Seaside from their house in Hillsboro to catch a tide, get his limit, and drive home. I was able to accompany him on some of these outings and watched the master. He'd wear hip-waders and use a slim, bent shovel. While the rest of us were stomping our feet around holes in the sand, he'd be out in the surf, uncovering razor clams with that shovel and thrust his arm, shoulder-deep into the freezing water, and pull up a dandy. He'd put them in a gallon milk jug he'd widened the hole in with his pocket knife and tie it to his beltloop. It's been a record year for clammers on the Washington Coast over the last few months. My sister and her man have spent the last two days on Long Beach, harvesting their 20-clam-per-person limits. If you head to our Facebook page, you'll see some pictures of their success. Until next time, Good Fishing!
