For FishingMagician.com, I'm Eric Granstrom. We used the downriggers on the boat for the first time this year last weekend at Billy Clapp Lake. It had been so long that it took me a while to get back into the swing of stacking rods. This is where you put a rod out and clip the line to the downrigger ball, then clip another rod's line another 20-feet up the downrigger line so you're trolling two lures "stacked" on top of each other. There's a delicate technique of getting the bottom rod out, then loosening the drag on it slightly so you can help drop the second rod while feathering the line with thumb pressure while simultaneously riding the downrigger brake, dropping both rods to the desired depth at the same time. I'd been toying with the idea of going away from the cable I've had on my downriggers forever and switching to braid. The advantages are plenty, including less line drag, no kinks, and no downrigger "hum". I finally made the switch this week and discovered a cool way to pull the cable off first.
