It was a bit wet and drizzly on the March 1st opening of several lakes in Central Washington, and turn out was low. Those who did get out on the water found very good fishing at some of the lakes. The best fishing was at Upper Caliche Lake, Martha Lake and the quality fly fishing lake, Lenice. Anglers at Caliche were all getting limit numbers of rainbow, with some 9 to 10 inches, most 11 to 12 inches and a surprising number of carryover rainbow to 18 inches. Martha Lake provided good fishing with most anglers taking four rainbow for the day. Yearling rainbow ranged in size from 10 to 11 inches, and there were a fair number of carryover trout to 18 inches taken on Martha on the opener. Lake Lenice, which is a quality lake near Beverly hasn’t been that great the past couple of seasons, but this year was different. Many anglers reported releasing double digit numbers of trout. Most of the fish were in the 14- to 16-inch class and there were also good amounts of trout in the 17- to 20-inch class in Lenice.
