By Dave Graybill

Summer run salmon season is now open on the Wenatchee River, and it is time for me to enjoy one of my summer favorites, and that is fly fishing on the Icicle River, above the Snow Creek Trailhead. It takes some time for the Icicle to drop into comfortable wading condition each year. Now the stream is at ideal levels. I like to wade in my shorts in this little river. When the temperature in Leavenworth is pushing 100 degrees it is significantly cooler when you drive up the valley. It is possible to wade across the river in most spots now, and there are lots of good places to find the small rainbow and cutthroat trout that inhabit the stream. I take a very light 3 weight rod, a small box of flies and I am ready to go. If you fish well above or below the campgrounds you will be surprised how few people you run into on the water. There is nothing like spending an afternoon and evening casting to these small fish on this scenic stream. I have been fishing it for years and never get tired of it. It is a great place to introduce new anglers to the sport of fly fishing, too.
