Fall Chinook salmon continue to pour over Bonneville Dam. Fishing in the lower river is excellent right now and it won’t long before it gets hot in the Hanford Reach area. I talked to Shane Magnuson, Upper Columbia Guide Services, who is camped on the lower river at Carson, and he reports limits most days on the lower river. He is fishing at Drano Lake, but he says that there is an excellent late morning bite off the mouth of the Klickitat. Further up stream anglers are working the waters below the mouth of the Deschutes River with success. Last year I fished this area at this time and in spite of very high winds had fantastic fishing. Most people prefer a style of angling called hover fishing. This is a method where a 2- to 6-ounce cannon ball weight is placed sliding on a three-foot leader to a gob of eggs. This is raised a couple of cranks above the bottom, and the idea is to keep this offering in a concentration of fish, while very slowly moving down river. It is very effective. One morning while fishing with Herb Good the boat with seven anglers aboard limited in less than an hour and a half.
