By Dave Graybill

Boy, it was a fabulous weekend to be outside. It was great to be on the Okanogan River, looking for steelhead, but the fish didn’t seem to appreciate the nice weather. My wife Eileen and I floated the Okanogan with Jerrod Gibbons, Upper Columbia Guide Services, and had a ball. We only released on wild fish and let another one go near the boat, but what a day. We passed one angler early in float and he said he had taken 20 fish from that spot the previous week, but on Sunday, nothing but one sucker. Jerrod called around and talked to some other people that were one the river that day, and it turned out we were the top boat! Go figure. The Okanogan had been red hot and that’s why I wan anxious to get out on it. I guess the fish heard I was coming and they headed up river. Jerrod suspected that the fish had moved upstream. That’s as good guess as any. There are just some days that the fish won’t bite. We just happened to pick a great day for a float, but not for catching.
