By Dave Graybill

Steelhead season got off to a great start, with anglers fishing the upper Columbia River above Wells Dam, the Methow and Okanogan rivers reporting good fishing. I talked to Kevin van Bueren at the Fly Shop at Sun Mountain Lodge and he said that lots of folks caught fish over the weekend on the Methow. There were cars parked at all the known holes, and most of the activity was on the lower river. At the mouth of Methow anglers were anchored under or near the bridge were getting action on their bobber and jig set ups. Anglers fishing from the docks at Pateros were getting some fish, too. I also noticed one boat fishing above Wells Dam off the fish ladder on the north side. They probably did pretty good. My wife and I had a great day. We had a ton of hits and boated one hatchery fish of about 8 pounds and released a wild buck of about 12 pounds. We also brought two triploids to the boat of about 3 and 6 pounds. We had good action the whole time and can’t wait to get out again.
