By Dave Graybill

Last Monday I had a meeting in Nespelem, so I made a detour on the way. I ran up to Spring Canyon Park from Coulee Dam. I like to fish from shore between the swimming area and the dam. I walk down until I see a steep drop off, so I can put my bait in what I figure to be 12 to 15 feet of water. I set up my rod holders, and I had to do this in the wet sand. The dry sand is frozen. I baited with a marshmallow and shrimp and threw my bait out as far as I could. Then I waited. I wait and waited, and nothing happened. I freshened my bait, added scent and still nothing. I was running out of time and quit after just an hour of fishing. In this same amount of time I have caught several nice fish here in the past. The average size has been 16 inches and I caught one that was 22 inches. This is really prime time for shore fishing at Spring Canyon. Maybe my bait was too deep this time. I think I will take a bobber rod with me next time and see if more shallow presentation would be better.
