One of the benefits of living in Leavenworth is being so close to the Icicle River. The river above the Snow Creek Trailhead is low, easy to wade and loaded with small rainbow trout. I like to head up there on hot summer afternoons with my fly rod and cool off, wading in shorts and casting for these fish. On Wednesday Eric Granstrom, of Gaboon Productions joined me with his video camera. He followed me up the stream and took video while I talked about how to fish the stream for one of the Fishing TV Shows. It was a bit breezy, making casting a challenge at times, but I still caught plenty of fish. I caught and released a bunch of small trout and one that was at least 11 inches, a real whopper for the Icicle. Check my web site for the video. It should be up pretty soon. This is a perfect time to fish the Icicle, and another of mine, the White River, above the falls. I hike down from the trail at the end of the road and get a mix of rainbow and cutthroat on this stream. Fishing should be good for about a month, before the water chills and the fish go dormant for winter.
