By Dave Graybill

I have received word that we could be seeing some changes in the current fishing opportunities for steelhead in our region. The changes would most likely affect the Wenatchee and Icicle rivers and the Columbia River from Rock Island Dam to Wells Dam. The anticipated return of steelhead appears to be much lower than originally forecast, which could prompt the closure to fishing in these areas. I have not received the official word on this yet, but it could be coming very soon. There is the possibility that these areas would reopen this spring, giving anglers the opportunity to remove hatchery fish from the rivers. I think that most anglers will be looking for places where they can be near a warming fire to do their fishing. Very chilly weather can be expected for our area for a while. I expect to see the popular fishing spots just above Chief Joseph Dam and near the net pens to see some traffic. I hope to be able to get back up to Lake Roosevelt and the shore off Spring Canyon to do some trout fishing again soon. Next time I will be taking my propane heater along!
