By Dave Graybill

I mentioned that I had a busy week last week and told you about my trip down the Yakima River, now I want to share what I did last Friday and Saturday. I traveled down to the lower Columbia River way below the Dalles and near the town Stevenson. I was invited down to join Shane Magnuson, Upper Columbia Guide Services to hop on his boat and fish Drano Lake. Drano is a very popular side channel of the Columbia and when the spring Chinook start making their way up stream it is loaded with them. It is no secret and there can be well over a hundred boats in an area about the size of Fish Lake near Lake Wenatchee. Magnuson is an old hand at navigating among these boats, and we had no trouble at all getting out baits in front of the springers. On the first day we hooked four fish in less than two hours, but only got one to the boat later in the morning. The next day we had two in the boat by 9 a.m., and decided breakfast sounded good. We had very high winds and rain both days while I was there. The springers were 12 to 15 pounds and really liked Mag Lip Flatfish.
