I just got a news release announcing that Senator Linda Evans Parlette, a republican from the Wenatchee District, has received a meritorious service award from the Washington Council of Trout Unlimited. The award was given in recognition of a lifelong commitment to the protection, conservation and restoration of Washington’s watersheds that support coldwater fisheries and their ecosystems. Parlette has been a champion of selective fisheries, including the Beebe Springs project in her district, which has expanded the spawning grounds for steelhead and salmon. Parlette’s 2009 Legislation, Senate Bill 5421, created the Columbia River Salmon and Steelhead Pilot Stamp Program. The passage of SB 5421 offset budget cuts to the selective fisheries program and also allowed four hatcheries to remain open. Another note from Olympia for hunters is a reminder to get their reports on hunting activities to the Department of Fish and Wildlife. The reports are due by January 31st. All hunters, whether successful or not, are required to submit activity reports. Failure to meet the deadline can result in a fine. Hunters who miss the activity report deadline must pay a $10.00 penalty before they can purchase a 2010 hunting license.
