By Dave Graybill

Once the Rocky Island Kids Fishing Day and the general lowland lakes trout season is in our rear view mirror, the next item that will be getting many anglers attention is the spring salmon run. It will be hitting the lower Columbia, above Bonneville Dam soon, and there is a near-record run expected this year. Projections for this season exceed 400,000 spring Chinook, which could mean excellent fishing on the lower river and up to three times the fish available to anglers on the Icicle River in Leavenworth. I have been lucky enough to experience spring salmon fishing on the Icicle a few times and it is something very special. It is really something to be on the river while the valley wakes up—the scenery and wildlife seen is amazing—and to catch a salmon on top of it all is incredible. The only downside of the Icicle River fishery is the lack of access. There are a whole lot of anglers trying to get on this short drift in their boats, and very little area available to shore anglers. The good news is that there is an effort underway to allow fishing for spring salmon on the Wenatchee.
