Now that the annual lowland lake trout season opening weekend is behind us anglers can look further down the road at some of the possibilities for fishing for other species coming up. Spring salmon fishing is a big one. I am traveling to the lower Columbia to fish the Drano Lake and Wind River areas, but anglers can also find spring salmon closer to home. Two sections of the Yakima River are open to spring salmon fishing. One is from the I-182 Bridge in Richland upstream to an area below Horn Rapids. The other is from the I-82 Bridge in Union Gap upstream to an area below Roza Dam. There are enough spring salmon forecasted to return the Yakima this year to allow for a fishery, and if you want more details, go to the Department of Fish and Wildlife web site and look for recent news releases. Another favorite spring salmon fishery is the one on the Icicle River at Leavenworth. This could be a banner year for springers on the Icicle, and there is even talk about opening the Wenatchee River to salmon fishing this year. Opening would really help relieve the pressure on the Icicle, which has very little public access.
