By Dave Graybill

Chinook salmon are still being caught in good numbers in the Brewster area, but the really hot action on fresh, bright fall-run kings is happening now further down river. Anglers are heading off the returning fall fish in the White Bluffs region on the Columbia, and they are also showing up in pretty fair numbers below Wanapum Dam. Shane Magnuson, of Upper Columbia Guide Services, reports taking kings to 34 pounds already at White Bluffs. I also talked to some local anglers that have been limiting on a fairly regular basis below Wanapum. Steelhead are so numerous that they are hitting Super Baits and even herring intended for the kings, but are being released, of course, until the opening of seasons are announced. The word is still no earlier than late September or early October for the steelhead opener this year. To give anglers an idea of what to expect, it is predicted that there will be 15,000 steelhead in the Methow this year. That compares to just 4,500 for all of last season. It appears that our numbers over Priest Rapids Dam will exceed 30,000 steelhead pretty easily. If you want to get a guided trip this year, better call now.
