By Dave Graybill

I finally made my fall trip to Buffalo Lake and I did find the kokanee fishing worth the trip. As most of you know the weather was very stormy over the long weekend, and it was a factor in my success. Saturday was cold and very windy. It was very difficult to control mainly my speed. The bow mounted electric motor on my Lund 1800 Sport Angler kept me on track, but the gusty wind had my speed all over the place. I did manage to hook five and land four before I had to beat it off the water ahead of a serious squall. The next morning was calm, though, and when I ran down to the area where I had found fish the day before it was “fish on” right off the bat. I limited on kokanee of 12 to 14 inches in under two hours. The first hour was crazy. I couldn’t get the second rod set before I hooked a fish. I did release on rainbow of about 18 inches while at Buffalo and people were filling buckets with big crawdads, too. Fall turns out to be a great time to visit this Colville Reservation Lake. Now I’ll shift gears and start hitting the late summer-runs and fall kings below Wells Dam.
