The upcoming steelhead season has everyone’s attention, but anglers should know that there is some great bass and walleye fishing going on right now. The Northwest Bass Tournament Championship was held recently on Banks Lake and they had great fishing. There were 103 boats in the tournament and most of the boats limited, and the fishing was very good on top water plugs in the center and north end of the lake. A fully-rigged boat was won by the team of Ronald Hobbs, Jr. and Mike Wolsky. The big fish was 4.16 pounds. There were a whole bunch of walleye caught by the bass anglers, as the walleye are suspended in the same area that anglers were finding the bass. There are some very nice perch being caught right now by anglers fishing in bays in front of the airport. Another good place to look for walleye right now is below Wells Dam. The salmon angling crowds have thinned and walleye to about 5 pounds can be taken fishing close to the shores on the far side. Anglers can expect better trout fishing in the early fall at area lakes, too, with Jameson being lake to watch this season for big trout.
