On my way to Moses Lake on Monday, I had to take a detour through Ephrata, so I could take a peek at Rocky Ford Creek. I wanted to see if the weeds that flourish here in the summer had cleared out at all. This is one of my favorite places to fish in the winter, and about the only place I can use my flyrod that time of year. Rocky Ford Creek is spring fed, so it doesn’t freeze and is I loaded with big rainbow along its mile-long public access. Through an arrangement with the WDFW, Trout Lodge maintains a good population of trout in the stream. It is very common to see very large trout lazily feeding in their lanes in the stream, right near the shore, or within easy reach of a cast. However, these fish have probably seen a lot of offerings in a day and can be very selective about what they consider a meal. Some days the fish are aggressively taking whatever comes near them. On other occasions, they will ignore your best efforts. When you see a big one inhale your tiny fly it is heart-stopping fun!!
