By Eric Granstrom

For FishingMagician.com, I'm Eric Granstrom. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? That's a great question! Plus, what's a woodchuck anyway? Well, after a little research I found that a woodchuck is a groundhog or known as a whistle pig in Pennsylvania. They're all part of the marmot family, but a marmot we see in Eastern Washington are much smaller. The yellow-bellied marmot is about 8-pounds where a good-sized groundhog can go 16-pounds. Of course, today is Groundhog Day. It's a day when all eyes focus on Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania where the "Inner Circle" knocks on the door of a stump, awakens "Phil" from his winter's nap to predict whether there will be an early spring or not. They've been doing this since the late 1800's and, according to the "Inner Circle", Phil's correct on his predictions 100% of the time. Now, nonpartisan prognosticators says Phil's predictions are about 35-to-40 percent accurate. This goes back to an old pagan holiday of Imbolc or known among Christians and Candlemas. It says if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on February second, winter and cold weather will last another six weeks. Phil saw his shadow this morning. Until next time, Good Fishing!
