For those who don’t want to get out in the elements this time of year, there are some ways to dedicate time to preparing for the spring fishing season. A good one is to learn to tie flies. Many fly clubs or sporting goods stores offer classes and this is the time to learn, not when the fishing season is already off and running. That’s when you take casting lessons. I noticed that North 40 Outfitters up in Omak is offering classes starting January 20th, beginning at 5 p.m. and going to 6:30 p.m. The classes are free and all the tools and materials are free, too. You just need to stop by the store to sign up. Another good winter distraction is the sport shows that come up this time every year. The first one in our region is the 24th Annual Tri-Cities Sportsman Show at the TRAC in Pasco. It starts on Friday, January 22nd. I have going to this one for years and always enjoy my time there. I really like our regional shows. There is plenty to see and do without the crush of the bigger shows.
