By Dave Graybill

The day after we fished Sprague Lake the weather turned sour and we woke up to wind and rain. Rollie Schmitten and I decided to do some exploring. We had heard of many great fishing lakes in the area and wanted to see a couple of them. We picked up a free map at the local gas station and convenience store and headed east on the road that parallels I-90. We were both surprised at the number of lakes that are in the vicinity of the town of Sprague and the names of many of them were familiar to me. Some of the lakes that have been on my list to visit for a while were Fishtrap, Williams and Rock lakes. All of them are known for very good trout fishing and also other species. We made a stop at Williams Lake and were surprised at the facilities available here. It is open from the general lowland trout fishing opener in April through the end of September, as were many of the lakes in the area. We also stopped at Rock Lake, which is on Highway 23, which heads south from Sprague. This lake is known to produce very large rainbow and has very good spiny ray fishing, too. The launch can be a challenge for larger boats this time of year. I want to try all the lakes near Sprague. Lots of opportunity here.
