By Dave Graybill

I finally was able to get up to Rufus Woods Reservoir to fish for trout. It had been years since I fished the upper end of the reservoir. I know I will be hitting it this winter, since I won’t be steelhead fishing. My fishing buddy Mike McKee joined me, and when we rolled into one of my favorite fishing areas he got a 24-inch walleye. We were fishing crank baits for trout, so you can see why many fish this end of the reservoir for walleye. We trolled Rapalas and Flicker Shads up the shoreline and got four rainbow, including a 3 ½- and 2 ½-pound triploid. We also observed another boat that was working the same area. They were very methodically casting what looked like large marabou jigs or skirted jigs to the shore and working them back to the boat. I heard one of them call out that one of their trout weighed 4 pounds, 12 ounces. On our way home we stopped at Banks Lake, and we were getting a lot of marks on the depth sounder. When we put crawlers on harnesses down the bottom I caught a burbot. What a surprise!
