When Brian Nielson, of BJs Guide Service, invited me down to try the walleye fishing on Potholes Reservoir, he said that we may not get many, but we would probably get at least one good fish. He was right. That has been the pattern on Potholes so far this fall, and he, James Labow and I had that experience. We started off trolling crank baits and got a good bass and a small walleye and then switched to Smile Blades and Slow Death Hooks. The first fish we got was a 27 ½-inch whopper. The weather was breezy in the morning and we even trolled through a couple of rain showers later in the day. We had just enough action to keep our attention focused on our rods. We got several nice perch and a few more keeper walleye. We did get three of the small catfish, or bullheads, that plague anglers that use bait, too. I know that the fall fishing will improve down there and I think that people can expect to do about what we did for now. The very good chance of getting a couple of walleye well over 20 inches is enough to get most anglers out there anyway.
