By Dave Graybill

In less than two weeks the March 1st early trout season opens on several lakes in Eastern Washington. This has always been popular, with anglers eager to get back out on the water after winter. Included in the March 1st opener are Burke and Quincy lakes, and a few others in the Quincy Wildlife Area. Martha Lake, which is east of the town of George, is probably the most popular on the first, with very good shore access and a surprising number of large rainbow caught the first morning. To the west of George are the Caliche Lakes, and the main lake usually produces limit catches of 11- to 12-inch rainbow. The quality lakes near Beverly, Lenice and Nunnally, are popular with fly anglers, but haven’t lived up their reputation the past couple of season. One lake that appears to be on the rebound is Lenore, just north of Soap Lake. No one knows exactly why, but the lake offered very good fishing last fall and is anticipated to produce good catches of Lahontan cutthroat this spring. Please refer to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife pamphlet for special rules on some of these lakes that will be opening on March 1st.
