If you ever wanted to catch a coho salmon on one of our local rivers, you may want to give fishing the Icicle River near the National Fish Hatchery in Leavenworth a try. I stopped by here recently and was amazed at the number of coho that are swarming in this part of the river. They are right next to shore and anglers are getting very good numbers of them. They are using pretty light gear and tossing jigs or spoons into the current and letting them swing in close to the bank. Sometimes they are getting their fish right away and other times it takes a lot of casts to put their lure in front of a biter. The coho being caught are anywhere from 5 to 12 pounds. Although they dark the meat is often very good, certainly good enough for the smoker. The males tend to have better meat than the females which are full of eggs. The limit is two coho a day and the season runs until the end of the month. I just got word that as part of the Pateros Celebrates Steelhead Season event that there will be a prize for the biggest steelhead weighed in on Saturday. There will be scale at the Super Stop so you can pull up to the docks there to weigh your fish.
