The first annual CCA Salmon Derby, sponsored by Hooked on Toys and Town Ford, was a big success. Although angler’s efforts were hampered by high flows on the Columbia River between Rock Island and Rocky Reach Dam, about 40 fish were weighed in by the 70 derby participants. First place was won by Stuart Hurd, with a 31-pound, 4-ounce king. The catch he turned in on Sunday also won him third place for Total Weight at 88 pounds even. Second place for Big Fish was won by Austin Moser with a king weighing 27 pounds, 8 ounces. This fish was a the top of the tote board with just 14 minutes remaining in the derby, but was knocked off by Hurd’s big king. He was also knocked off the Total Weight board at the same time. Placing third for Big Fish was Shane Magnuson with a 25-pound king. Magnuson also claimed second place for Total Weight. Winning the Total Weight category was Brandon Collins, with 100 pounds even. The derby concluded with a banquet at the local Eagle’s Lodge and Bob Shelton won a 4hp, four stroke kicker donated by Bob Feil Boats and Motors for the Mystery Weight prize. All that participated agreed that they were eager for next’s event.
