By Dave Graybill

In spite of the very chilly and miserable weather, a fair number of anglers turned out for the March 1st opening day at the Quincy Wildlife Area, the lakes near George. Very few decided on trying the quality lakes, though. Martha Lake was once again the standout with very good catch rates. Most of the trout were 11 to 13 inches with several in the 15- to 20-inch class taken as well. Quincy Lake was mostly frozen but anglers that fished the open water at the east and west ends caught some nice rainbow. The fish ranged in size from 11 to 16 inches. Burke Lake was 70 percent ice free on opening day and although anglers didn’t catch a lot of fish in the chilly water, the trout were 12 to 15 inches, with at least one 20-incher taken. The fishing on all of these lakes will improve as the weather warms, and there will be some great fishing here this spring. Only about 40 percent of Upper Caliche Lake was ice free on the opener, and although 31 anglers stopped by to fish, catching was slow. Anglers didn’t spend much time here, due to weather and the small size of the trout, which were only 8 to 10 inches. I’ll have word on the Trout Derby in my next report.
