By Dave Graybill

I was recently approached by a very young girl and she had a question for me. “Where is the best fishing right now,” she asked. I told here with complete confidence that she should get her dad to take her to the Blackbird Island juvenile pond. She would not only be able to catch her limit of five trout pretty quickly there, but she may even catch something very, very big. You see I know that the pond is loaded with 10- to 11-inch trout, and that the Department of Fish and Wildlife has added some mature steelhead to the pond. The hatchery steelhead had been removed at Tumwater Dam and deposited into the Blackbird Island juvenile pond. I would encourage anyone with young anglers under the age of 15 to get to the pond for guaranteed good time fishing for trout. All you need is some worms and maybe a bobber, just to add to the excitement of seeing the trout take the bait. You will catch fish, and you will make your young angler very happy. There’s even the chance that you could catch one of these big steelhead. The Blackbird Island juvenile pond is accessed from a trail off Commercial Street in Leavenworth, or from the City Park at the bottom of Enchantment Parkway, near the condos.
