By Dave Graybill

Steelhead fishing has been stalled on our area rivers. Temperatures have hit single digits and even negative numbers over night in some areas. I don’t care how hardy you are, it is just too cold for fishing. Nothing works. Lines freeze, you freeze, be patient. There are warmer days ahead. The weekend will warm up to just about freezing in the Wenatchee area, and that’s warm enough to allow fishing on the Wenatchee River. I have a limit on when I will go steelhead fishing in the winter. If it’s below 25 degrees, forget it. There are plenty of days in the extended forecasts that exceed this threshold, so I know I will get plenty of fishing in this season. It never fails, though. Just when the fish get in the mood the weather turns on us and makes things difficult. As I say, this is a temporary condition. I will be out on the water in a couple of days. In the meantime I am looking a the web cam at Fish Lake. It is getting very close to the time that the big brown trout will be catchable up there. Scott West at the Cove Resort says he likes to wait until there is some ice along the edges. With this weather I should be seeing ice any day now.
